Buffer-layer ablation
Work on ablation between the metal sheath and buffer layer of high-voltage XLPE cables, including a test method and a cable design addressing this failure mechanism.
Laboratory observations were compared with damage in failed cables to investigate the role of electrical discharge.
Degassing
Methane produced during crosslinking must be removed safely. Degassing conditions depend on cable construction, insulation thickness and temperature.
Temperature limits must also account for the deformation behaviour of the outer semi-conductive layer.
Online layer measurement
Commissioning of Ultrascreen equipment measuring layer thickness during production, compared with X-ray results and cable tests.
Measurements were used to adjust extrusion conditions, with fewer reported failures during testing.
